Today, the National Organization for Women-New York State, comprised of 23 chapters, and 40,000 supporters, stands with the NYS Anti Trafficking Coalition to say we must stop the business of trafficking in New York State.

For too long, our NYS Legislature has stood still and continued to put the lives of women and girls at risk, by taking no action to pass pro-active legislation to protect the victims of this heinous crime.

According to a report as early as 2001, “SEX TRAFFICKING OF WOMEN

IN THE UNITED STATES, INTERNATIONAL AND DOMESTIC TRENDS”

(Co-Principal Investigators, Janice G. Raymond, PhD, University of Massachusetts, Amherst), Donna M. Hughes, PhD, University of Rhode Island

Project Coordinator, Carol J. Gomez, BA, “In the Northeast reported sex businesses include street prostitution, escort services, massage parlors, health clubs, brothels in hotels, rented houses and apartments and legitimate front businesses. In Metro New York, reported sex businesses include street prostitution, strip clubs, go-go bars, peep or fantasy booth shows, massage parlors, after-hours clubs, private apartments, hotels, escort services and makeshift operations in beauty parlors, restaurants and warehouses.”

Today, we call upon Governor Spitzer, Speaker Sheldon Silver and Senator Joseph Bruno to pass legislation that is meaningful; legislation that does not harm and revictimize the victim, but which penalizes the trafficker in ways that will send a message to all individuals who would dare to exploit poor and young women.
