On Monday, March 19, 2007, NOW New York State , local NOW activists and advocates will link arms to protect the mothers and children of our state. Joining together on the first day of a very public criminal trial, at the Supreme Court building, 320 Jay Street , Brooklyn , NY , at 1:00 pm, activists will speak up and speak out . Press is invited to ask questions.
One Judge at a time! If this is how it has to be, so be it! We will not stop until every individual who has power in the NYS Courts, is exposed for their hypocrisy. Battered mothers and children are suffering in New York State because the court system is broken and no one wants to fix it.
Every day, our NY State headquarters and NOW chapters from the around the state receive phone calls from desperate mothers who need help dealing with the courts. When I met with Governor Spitzer during his campaign, he asked where the problem was. The problem of battered mothers losing custody of their children to the abusive father was a topic of serious discussion. Governor Spitzer knows what he needs to do. And now he must do it. He must use the power of his position to right the wrongs of Family Court and Supreme Court.
The case in question is regarding Judge Garson who allegedly accepted a bribe in a custody case involving Freida Haminov, a mother fighting for her children.See http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2005/02/18/48hours/main674950.shtml This case is just the tip of the iceberg, and is one of thousands of cases across New York State and the country. Good mothers are being unjustly sent to jail, and re-victimized by the very court system that should be protecting them and their children
Good mothers are having their children ripped from their arms. Abusive fathers are winning custody, and they are paying big bucks to literally “traffick” their own children. Children are given or sold off so the abusive fathers can continue their reign of terror on the children and the mothers who are desperate to find justice. Who will listen? Governor Spitzer, are you listening? Senator Bruno, are you listening? Speaker Silver, are you listening? Judge Judith Kaye, are you listening? We don't hear you!
NOW- New York State hopes that all District Attorneys will be working hard to eliminate bias, violence and corruption in the courts. If Judge Garson is convicted of his heinous crime, this case will send a message to attorneys, law guardians and judges. They will think twice before they mistakenly believe that a nod, a wink or a secret handshake will be a substitute for due process.
The National Organization for Women- New York State seeks to achieve full equality and justice for women. Over 40,000 supporters and members support the work that NOW NYS does on behalf of women.
