Women from the National Organization for Women-NYS, local NOW Chapters and the Battered Mothers Custody Conference demand justice for battered mothers.
In family court cases throughout the country, and here in New York State, women who report battering or child abuse by the father of their children are having those children snatched away from them and given to the father who has abused them.
Locally, Judge Christian Hummel, who normally presides in Rensselaer County, in a Columbia County Family Court case, awarded custody to an allegedly abusive father. Ample evidence and testimony supporting the mother's allegations were presented to this judge, who nonetheless awarded custody to the father (see Times-Union coverage of this case published on 10-29-05 and 10-21-05).
This story is all too common all over this country. This report of Judge Hummel’s decision puts yet another nail in the coffin for women who are fighting for their own lives and the lives of their children.
On Tuesday, November 1, at 2:30 pm, Marcia Pappas, President of NOW-NYS, Mo Hannah, Chair of the Battered Mothers Custody Conference, battered mothers, and advocates will gather in front of the Rensselaer County Family Court House, 1504 Fifth Avenue, Troy, and proceed to the Rensselaer County Court House at Second and Congress Street, where Judge Hummel normally presides, to demand justice.
