On behalf of over 35,000 supporters and the women of New York State , Marcia A. Pappas, President of the National Organization for Women-New York State, Inc., states,
The National Organization for Women- New York State is appalled that in the year 2005, it is necessary for professional umpires to file a race and gender discrimination lawsuit against the United States Tennis Association, the International Tennis Federation and top officials at each organization.
Two individuals Cecil Hollins and Sande French, both African-American, have alleged that they have been victims of racial slurs, hostile work environments and retaliation after they complained about unfair treatment. Further, French is suing both organizations, alleging that she and other women umpires are victims of discrimination based on gender.
Today, we join forces with Margarita Lopez, a member of the NYC Council and a candidate for Manhattan Borough President who has vowed to take action against the defendants. NOW wholeheartedly supports her action to introduce a “resolution in the City Council calling upon the USTA to promote fair labor practices, end discrimination and report back to the council on its implementation of a diversity plan.”
The National Organization for Women- New York State , works to eliminate discrimination in the workplace and Ending Racism is one of NOW's core issues. Reports such as these are disturbing and must be investigated to the fullest extent.
