The National Organization for Women-New York State strongly supports A6847/S4025.
Law guardians, who have existed in Family Court since 1962 and in Supreme
Court since 1990, can and often do focus attention on the best interest of
the child.
However, many law guardians handle excessive case loads leaving them little
or no time to interview the children they are representing and failing to provide
effective representation, to children who are totally at their mercy.
In an overburdened system in which judges rely so heavily on the law guardian's
input and judgment, children continue to be placed at risk when law guardians
are overburdened with excessive caseloads. This legislation attempts to protect
those children, giving them the service that is sorely needed in order to make
judgment for the future of the child.
NOW New York State urges the New York State Legislature to pass A6847/S4025.
