The National Organization for Women is a national organization with chapters in each of the 50 states. NOW is an activist rather than a direct services organization. This simply means that NOW seeks to effect change through lobbying, advocacy, education and protest, and does not serve clients. You can learn more about our work, and the history of the National Organization for Women at our national web site.

NOW-New York State (NOW-NYS) is the statewide Chapter of NOW in New York State. It is the largest women's political action organization in New York, representing over 40,000 women and men in 24 chapters. The chapter is dedicated to fighting for women's equality, and to improving the status of women in New York.

NOW-NYS is governed by an Executive Committee and a State Council. Officers include:

President: Zenaida Mendez
Executive Vice President: Barbara Kirkpatrick
Legislative Vice President: Heidi Siegfried
Secretary: Gaby Moreno

The State President works closely with the NOW-NYS Council and Task Forces to ensure that NOW-NYS' organizational agenda and legislative goals are met. Under the direction of the State President, the State Office ensures that all NOW-NYS members are aware and informed participants in the legislative process. The NOW-NYS Council is composed of Chapter Delegates, Task Force Chairpersons and the Executive Committee. The Council analyzes and determines NOW-NYS's official position on particular pieces of legislation, closely monitors bills in both the Assembly and the Senate, and alerts NOW leadership and members when action is needed. NOW-NYS undeniably influences public policy making in New York State and the force of 14,000 members statewide should not be taken lightly.

In addition to its Political Action Committee (PAC) , NOW-NYS also maintains the NOW-NYS Foundation to support social change initiatives.
